Urbanism and urban planning have undergone a significant transformation over the last decade. The cities of the world, including Lviv, are quickly adapting to new realities, shifting the focus to people and their needs. Modern trends, such as the revitalization of industrial zones, the development of bicycle infrastructure and the creation of multifunctional spaces, not only change the face of cities, but also significantly affect the quality of life of their residents. Together with the Avalon team, we are watching with interest the global trends that have changed Lviv and other cities of the world over the past 10 years.

1. Revitalization of urban spaces: new life for old areas

Urbanism is increasingly turning to the concept of revitalization - restoring cluttered or industrial urban areas and giving them a new function. This is not only a way of adapting to modern needs, but also an opportunity to preserve the historical character of the city. In Europe, former industrial areas are being transformed into cultural and residential centers that combine modern infrastructure with historic buildings.

A vivid example of this trend in Lviv is the Jam Factory Art Center, a cultural and artistic space in Pidzamcha. Once a factory worked here, and today it is a modern center for art exhibitions and performances. The revitalization project preserved the architectural uniqueness of the building, giving it a new purpose and turning it into an important cultural location of the city.
Restoration of abandoned spaces in Lviv is not just about reconstruction, it is a step towards creating new communities. Investments in infrastructure, housing and public spaces contribute to the transformation of old areas into modern, active and attractive for businesses and new residents.

2. A city for people: priority for pedestrians and cyclists
Recent decades have shown that car-centric approaches to urban space planning are becoming a thing of the past. Instead, cities create infrastructure that prioritizes pedestrians, cyclists, and public transportation. This global trend helps to improve not only the mobility of citizens, but also the general environmental situation.

Lviv became one of the first cities in Ukraine to systematically develop a bicycle network. Since 2011, the length of bicycle paths has increased significantly and today it is more than 100 km. The development of bicycle infrastructure has a huge impact on reducing the load on roads and promotes the popularization of ecological transport. Thanks to the bike paths, Lviv residents got the opportunity to move around the city more conveniently, and Lviv itself strengthened its reputation as an ecological city.

3. Green infrastructure: natural solutions for the city
In cities, preference is increasingly given to public spaces with a natural, "wild" landscape. This allows you to help in the fight against the changes in the city's climate, and also adds a sense of nature among the stone space. Natural solutions provide effective and sustainable strategies to reduce flooding risks. They use natural processes to absorb and store excess water, slowing runoff and the impact of flooding. Such solutions include the preservation and restoration of water bodies, the creation of green roofs and rain gardens.

Lviv is also actively implementing "green" solutions. New public spaces are arranged taking into account modern ecological standards, which allows creating places for recreation with maximum benefit for the environment. The updated Koliivshchyna Square, Mytna Square are just a few examples of updated public spaces that have become a place for citizens to meet and relax.

4. Multifunctional spaces: the future of urban planning

One of the brightest trends of the last decade is the creation of multifunctional spaces. The popularity of mixed-use developments lies in their ability to create vibrant, self-sustaining communities where people can live, work and play in close proximity. This not only improves the quality of urban life, but also contributes to the economic and social viability of cities. This trend illustrates the trend towards more integrated and dynamic urban environments.

An example of such development is the new residential microdistricts that are emerging in Lviv. They integrate residential buildings with offices, shops, cafes and sports fields, allowing residents to spend their day within one area without having to move around the city frequently. This significantly reduces the load on the infrastructure and creates conditions for the development of the local economy.

Over the last decade, urban planning has undergone rapid changes, becoming as human-centric as possible, and Lviv is becoming a part of this process step by step. The city implements the best global practices to improve the lives of its residents and create comfortable conditions for business and tourism. By embracing these new trends and influencing the development of our cities, we are creating a sustainable and comfortable environment that will meet the needs of future generations. Lviv is already showing an example of how you can combine traditions with innovations, creating a city in which you want to live and develop.
